Articles, DVDs and videos are filled with how-to’s on how to get your horse away from their friends, away from the gate, to not rush back to the barn. You can learn 100 different methods, and they might work for a bit, but they will have side effects. Example: work your horse at the gate harder than away from the gate. Maybe it works and your horse doesn’t want to go to the gate anymore. But you’ve made work unpleasant- why would you ever want to make work with you unpleasant? And additionally, how much time did your horse spend anxious, out of balance and on the forehand? What did they really learn here?

The bigger, more important question is why they want to be at the gate, back at the barn, away from you. Why isn’t being with you a comfortable place to be? These are the questions you need to be asking, and finding solutions to.

  1. Amy, I am giving a seminar at the end of the month and I am going to tell everyone in attendance that it would be in their and their horse’s best interest to start reading your blog. They are all good and make you stop, reflect and think. Short concise bits that often tend to be pretty profound Thanks
